IBM Research Scientist: Accelerated Materials in San Jose, California

Your Role and Responsibilities

The accelerated materials discovery group at IBM Research - Almaden is focusing on bringing AI into the expert scientific decision thinking by developing machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning tools, as well as human-in-the-loop platforms. These tools are used in conjunction with automated chemistry lab capabilities and database development in the chemistry, and specifically the polymer domain.

The Research Staff Member (RSM) will be responsible for:

  • Design and development of a deep reinforcement learning platform for experimental discovery of polymers

  • Carrying out research in meta-reinforcement learning and model-based reinforcement learning

  • Adapting cutting-edge AI developments to the specifics of the materials discovery in industrial context

  • Collaborative projects with experimental scientists working with manual and robotic platforms to gather new datasets and enable training, testing, and deployment of deep reinforcement learning models

  • Application of reinforcement learning algorithms for natural language processing tasks

  • Publishing research results in top-tier AI conferences; development of IP in relevant domains

This position requires strong and frequent collaboration with computer scientists, chemists and materials scientists across different departments. As such, the research staff member needs, in addition to excellent technical skills listed below, good written and oral communication skills and demonstrated success in team-based projects. Ability to balance proactive approach to research with team responsibilities is critical.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • At least one (1) year experience of each of the following:

  • Reinforcement learning

  • Handling model uncertainty

  • Bayesian statistics

  • End-to-end machine learning

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
