Supporting a pipeline of pure and applied science breakthroughs is foundational for the future success of IBM and our clients. For over 70 years, IBM Research has invested in fundamental work in the physical, mathematical, life and computer sciences. The return on these investments has been extraordinary: ground-breaking discoveries, six Nobel Laureates, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and innovations generating a record 9,130 patents in 2020.
The IBM Research Exploratory Science Program invites our researchers, developers and designers, along-side our university partners, to think outside of the box, dares us to take risks, and asks us to pause and identify the problems whose game-changing solutions will transform science and technology over the upcoming decade.
Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Research seeks a post-doctoral visiting scientist to pursue exploratory research using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopes to study magnetic and electronic properties of atomically precise nanostructures. This project makes extensive use of atom manipulation to create unique structures, and single-atom magnetic resonance to obtain high energy resolution and quantum control of individual electron spins. Candidate would work with small team of scientists in experiment design, hardware construction and upgrades, experiment execution, model design, data analysis, and preparation of publications. Experience in scanning tunneling microscopy, ultrahigh vacuum surface science, low temperature techniques, and magnetic resonance are preferred. The position is at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California.
