IBM Lead Software Engineer - Watson Health in CLEVELAND, Ohio

Your Role and Responsibilities

Watson Health is a series of acquisitions that have been integrated into IBM over many years. It features a large, broad portfolio of offerings spanning health stakeholders, services, and data assets. It targets large value pools where data and analytics can decrease healthcare waste and inefficiency.

WH's 2020+ strategy is focused on unification across business unit market segments while designing and implementing a scalable technology approach for the future. This includes (but is not limited to) driving technical integration of products for enterprise impact, leveraging broader IBM capabilities for scale, and building a cloud-based analytics, AI, and automation-enabled health platform.

We are hiring a Lead Software Engineer to help deliver on this strategy. This role will involve participation in technical architecture guilds, coaching engineers to expand their horizons for themselves and IBM Watson Health through quality code and SDLC processes, and advocacy for the utilization of leading edge technology in products, services, processes and tools. It will also require knowledge of Agile advances such as Inner Source principles to maximize software and technical asset reuse.

  • Fulfill “hands-on” software development and technical leadership responsibilities

  • Lead development squads by planning and distributing work, leading Agile rituals, mentoring team members, and ensuring a high standard of deliverable quality

  • Advocate for software development best practices, and bring knowledge of new technologies to the team

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle including solution definition, design, implementation, and testing

  • Develop, troubleshoot, and optimize new and existing distributed software solutions

  • Responsible for project and code quality, including participation in code reviews

  • Develop software and tools that maintain high system availability, monitor data quality, and provide usage statistics

  • Regularly contribute to ongoing improvements in engineering process and product development ecosystem

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 8+ years of experience working on high complexity software projects

  • Prior experience leading and/or managing a development team in an Agile environment

  • Understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) principles and languages

  • Proficiency with at least one of the following: Java, JavaScript, Python, Scala, Ruby, Go, C++ Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis

  • Knowledge of relational databases and SQL (Db2, MySQL, Vertica, or equivalent)

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing APIs and services

  • 2+ years of experience developing and deploying complex Cloud-based solutions (IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)

  • Familiarity with automated testing tools and methodologies (TDD/BDD, JUnit, RSpec, JMeter, Cucumber, or equivalent)

  • Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Knowledge of distributed system and large-scale data processing technologies (Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, HBase, MapReduce)

  • Experience with container orchestration and technologies (Kubernetes, Docker)

  • Demonstrated practical experience with DevOps and CI/CD best practices, tools and frameworks

  • Healthcare industry experience and familiarity with healthcare terminology, data standards and workflows

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or related field
