Your Role and Responsibilities

The IBM Cognitive Systems Design Team has an exciting opportunity for a Design Researcher that is passionate about uncovering user needs and solving real world problems to join our growing team! In addition to our highly successful Power Virtual Server in the IBM Cloud offering, we are beginning work on several new, innovative Power Hybrid Cloud projects that will all require comprehensive research. We are looking for a unique blend of UX/Research skills to work closely with a team of Design, Product Management and Development to plan, prioritize and successfully deliver the research deliverables that are critical to our success.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct research using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative methods

  • Work cross-functionally with Design, Product Management, and Development to prioritize, plan, and deliver on research initiatives

  • Synthesize user feedback via hands-on team discussions in order to translate insights into actions and requirements

  • Contribute to storyboards and task flows designs, effectively communicating visual intentions to the design team and sponsor users

  • Use Agile practices to uncover your recommendations quickly, collaborate with other designers and disciplines, and shepherd actions to completion

  • Facilitate team activities to create and maintain personas in order to build team empathy for real users; use those personas in storytelling techniques such as empathy maps and as-is/to-be journey maps

  • Evangelize the importance of design research as part of IBM Enterprise Design Thinking and educate product teams new to design research methods in order to help them integrate real users into their design life cycle

Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for the user and design research, facilitate the practice of design research on your team

  • Facilitate research through collection, analysis and producing insights to lead the team towards user outcomes

  • Plan and execute user research studies that inspire exceptional user experiences

  • Understand user workflows and assist design team in iterating on customer requirements

  • Continually learn and grow your skills by understanding the user research landscape and keeping up to date with the latest research trends and practices

  • Understand how to better work with project peers to increase your team's practice of IBM Design Research

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • A minimum of 4-5 years of professional experience in User Research role, preferably within enterprise software

  • Ability to clearly communicate benefits and insights of user research in a way that generates empathy amongst cross-functional teams of Designers, Developers, and Product Managers

  • Ability to adapt existing research methods to the project's needs and to define new research as needed

  • Experience interviewing customers and synthesizing the results

  • Knowledgeable in Agile development practices

  • Outstanding storytelling and presentation skills

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience facilitating successful workshops, including remote

  • Technical background, preferably in a large enterprise environment

  • Proficient in Design Thinking methodologies and practices

  • Comfortable collaborating across multiple teams on a regular basis
