IBM Card Engineer/ PCB Designer in Austin, Texas

Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM Systems has an opening for a highly-motivated electrical engineer wanting to design our hardware products. We are part of a world-class development team that pioneers industry-leading hardware for IBM POWER Systems servers including OpenPOWER, Storage, Quantum, and IBM Research systems. Additionally, this technology is the foundation for innovations in support of Big Data, Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social, and Security.

Our development engineers participate in all aspects of the development process as well such as: architecture, card design, circuit design, physical design and layout, power optimization, design for test, microprocessor test and characterization, memory subsystem design, signal integrity, and mechanical and thermal engineering design as well as product engineering. Role Overview

The Card Design Engineer designs complex PCB designs for our hardware products. This position supports all phases of design, including schematic capture, layout, symbol and footprint creation, and the generation and release of all required PCB manufacturing information. The engineer will work in a fast paced environment with a team of electrical, mechanical, signal integrity, power, and EMI/EMC engineers and physical design technicians. The successful candidate will be a resourceful problem solver who is able to work around technical obstacles and work independently with little direct supervision.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gathering requirements for card design from other skill areas such as the Card Planning, Project Management, Power Development, Signal Integrity and System Architecture Teams

  • Interlocking schedule and delivery plans with project management and other stakeholders

  • Generating and processing schematics for each card design

  • Managing extensive reviews for each portion of a design and implementing agreed upon changes

  • Performing extensive validation on design with both industry and locally-generated utilities

  • Packaging and processing logics for physical design team engagement

  • Monitoring and supervising the physical layout of card design

  • Generating the data required for the manufacture of the card

  • Releasing manufacturing data via Product Lifecycle Management tools and repositories

  • Continuously monitoring performance, field issues, and yield rates and taking the necessary actions to solve any problems

  • Consistently increasing skill set by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, participating in associated organizations and more

  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and excelling in time management

  • Flexible and adapting well to complex challenges in a dynamic environment

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • At least 5 years of experience in PCB development with a focus on generating and processing schematics.

  • At least 5 years of experience with Cadence's Allegro Design Entry and PCB Editor tool suite

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Experience with other Schematic Capture tools and processes for PCB design

  • Design and verification of PCBs, particularly motherboards

  • Lab experience bringing up, troubleshooting, and testing hardware

  • Demonstrated experience programming in any of the following languages - Python, PERL, or Cadence's SKILL language

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical, Electronic or Computer Engineering or similar area
